Jason Collins has been diagnosed with Stage 4 glioblastoma. The former basketball pro, who made headlines in 2013 when he became the first active NBA player to come out as gay, announced his diagnosis Dec. 11 on the ESPN website.
Collins had previously announced he had a brain tumor but had been vague about the details.
Collins shared the update in an interview published Thursday with ESPN's Ramona Shelburne. Back in September, his family revealed in a statement to the NBA that he was undergoing treatment for a brain tumor. Collins explained in the ESPN interview that the statement was "intentionally vague."
